Journalist fighting subpoena to speak at The Media School in January

Freelance journalist Jamie Kalven, who is fighting a subpoena to name sources for his story about the police-involved shooting death of Chicago teenager Laquan McDonald, will speak at The Media School on Jan. 23.

The talk is at 5:30 p.m. in the Franklin Hall commons. It’s sponsored by the Center for International Media Law and Policy Studies and the Barbara Restle Press Law Project.

Kalven won the George Polk Award for Local Reporting for his Slate.com piece, “Sixteen Shots,” which challenged the official police version of the shooting. Attorneys for the officer involved say they need information on Kalven’s sources, which Kalven has said he won’t reveal.
